State Championship Jr Rodeo.....

Washington State currently has five active Jr. Rodeo associations; Northwest Junior Rodeo Association (NWJRA), Eastern Washington Junior Rodeo Association (EWJRA), Cayuse Junior Rodeo Association (CJRA), Central Idaho Junior Rodeo Association (CIJRA, and the recently formed Caribou Trail Junior Rodeo Association (CTJRA). An idea was recently conceived to combine competitors from each of these associations, and produce a state championship rodeo. Sounds like an enormous task doesn't it? Maybe not, consider these key notes…

Each association would nominate their 3 top competitors from each event to compete in the St. Championship…. if a rodeo was produced with 30 events covering 4 age divisions, due to the likelihood that most competitors would quality for more than one event, each association would nominate about 50 cowboys and cowgirls. Applying this format to the EWJRA's 1999 records, they would have nominated 46 competitors.

I know what you're thinking "sounds easy enough, but how would it be financed?"

Entry fees..each competitor could pay a flat fee of 150 dollars , this amount would cover the individual in all the events that they qualified for. Organizers would pay this back by awarding each competitor with a trophy jacket proclaiming their achievement as a St. Rodeo Qualifier. The balance would finance the stock charge.

Take a look at the math,
200 competitors X 150=30000

200 jackets X 75 =$-15000
Stock Charge =$ -5000

This 10000 dollar balance would be applied to facility fees, and additional awards.

Now what do you think? Several hundred kids, vying for a state championship, building lifetime friendships, while honing rodeo skills that can be applied at the next level. Parents and organizers would have the satisfaction of producing a first class rodeo that would reward each contestant with a well made trophy jacket embossed with "Washington State Junior Rodeo Championship-Finalist".

You know that the key to any successful rodeo event (at all levels) is participation. Since only an association can qualify a competitor, it would be a great incentive for kids to join your association. State Finals jackets and recognition also could supplement association year end awards and stretch your organizations awards budget. This also would be a worthwhile goal for first year rodeo competitors.

The Chelan County Fairgrounds in Cashmere has been considered, as well as the Omak Stampede Arena...each features well built facilities that could accommodate this event.

This is a worthwhile endeavor, it needs your participation and suggestions.
